Any trip to New York is incomplete without a visit to Ellis Island. An island that would bring hope to so many and misery to a few – earning the nickname ‘island of hope, island of tears’.
If you want to learn about New York, you must first take some time to learn about the history of immigration to New York. In 1890 Ellis Island was designated as the first Federal Immigration Station by Benjamin Harrison, and, it was on this small island in New York harbor that the future of millions of people was decided.
Visiting Ellis Island
Today, Ellis Island is one of New York’s most popular attractions for visitors to the city. The building which was previously used as the immigration station has been converted into a thought provoking museum that is well worth a visit.
The Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration tells the story of the millions of immigrants who were processed on the island. The original buildings have been preserved, where possible, and a number of tasteful exhibitions including photographs as well as personal objects bring the stories to life.
Our guided tour of The Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island will see your guide take you on the same journey as an immigrant would have made on Ellis Island; from the ferry dock, to the Baggage Room, through the Great Hall, down the Stairs of Separation and on to the Kissing Post.
