New York City is a bustling city with a lot of moving parts. The city is home to an incredible system of buses and subways, run by the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority). Travelling in the city can seem like a daunting task, but there are a number of resources to get you to where you want to go. Google maps provides routes and instructions to get you to where you need to go, as well as times to catch the train or bus you need. The MTA’s website, mta.info, can provide maps and timetables for navigation as well.
Only purchase Metrocards from Metrocard kiosks in transit centers and subway stations, or from approved vendors. Deli’s with a MTA sticker in the window will usually have Metrocards in stock.
Don’t worry if you miss a bus or train in Manhattan. During the day and most of the night, most of the buses and trains will travel within minutes of each other. You probably won’t end up waiting long. Depending on the line or bus route, the same may hold true in the other boroughs.
When taking the subway, be sure to follow these rules for your safety. Always stand behind the yellow line at the platform edge. Do not hold open subway doors, and keep belongings out of the way. A chime will tell you when they begin to close. Never go onto the tracks, for any reason; instead, tell a police officer or station personnel. Do not cross between subway cars unless told to do so by an MTA official.
For your trip, consider getting an Unlimited Metrocard. Riding the subways and buses can become costly for your visit, but a 7-day Unlimited Metrocard will only cost you $31 per person. When a ride on the subway or bus (with transfers) will cost you almost $3 per person, it may be a good investment. If you are visiting for much longer, there is also a 30-day option. Unlimited use cards can only be swiped once per bus or train, but you can swipe for as many people as you want with a standard card, paying for each swipe individually. Up to 3 children (up to 44 inches [112 cm] tall) can ride subways or local buses with a paying adult for free.
